Indian ace tennis star Sania Mirza has been the target of Muslim fundamentalists for her on-court dressing. And, in another case of moral policing and religious bigotry, a Muslim cleric has branded Mirza's attire as un-Islamic.
Sajid Rashid said if a sport required women to drop their burqas, then they should not take part in that sport.
Rashid, while talking in a TV debate on burqa and Muslim women, said Mirza's on-court clothing is “sexual and hence, un-Islamic.”
His comments came days after the player was bashed on social media for posting a photo of her in a beautiful red dress on Facebook. Several comments accused her of not following religious dress code and wearing 'revealing' clothes. Earlier, a Muslim cleric had issued a fatwa against Mirza for wearing short skirts during her matches.
In December, cricketer Muhammed Shami had come under attack from the extremist groups after he posted a few family photos on Facebook. The trollers, upset over the outfit of Shami's wife Hasin Jahan, sought to remind them of their religion and questioned why she was not wearing a hijab. A lot of comments lambasted Jahan for choosing to wear a sleeveless gown.
