Indian language Internet usage has already overtaken English language Internet in India, finds a study by Google and KPMG.

The report, ‘Indian languages—Defining India’s Internet’. provides an overview of the Indian language ecosystem and key behavioral aspects of Indian language internet users.

Indian language internet users will drive the next phase of internet adoption in India and will be more than 2.5 times of English internet user base by 2021. Language users grew at 41per cent between 2011 and 2016 to reach 234 million compared to 175 million English language Internet users in India. In 2011, Indian languages internet users were numbered at a mere 42 million.

The local language internet user-base is set to grow at 14 per cent Compounded Annual Growth Rateto reach 536 million by 2021 while the English internet user-base is expected to growth adjust 3 per cent to about 199 million by the same year.

By 2021, Hindi is expected to have 38 per cent of the internet user-base at 201 million, The rest will be made up of Tamil (6 per cent), Kannada (5 per cent), Bengali (8 per cent), Marathi (9 per cent), Malayalam (3 per cent), Telugu (6per cent), Gujarati (5 per cent) and several other languages (20 per cent).

The report also analyzes key categories of the internet ecosystem and varied adoption levels for the Indian language internet users. E-tailing, online government services and digital classifieds would witness highest growth in adoption rates across Indian language users till 2021. Chat applications and digital entertainment will continue to have high adoption levels amongst these internet users.
