In a shocking incident, a middle aged woman was raped by a man in full public view on a busy street in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, according to reports. What is more disturbing is the insensitivity of the onlookers who were busy filming the whole incident instead of rescuing her.
The spine-chilling incident happened in New Railway Colony around 2 pm in the afternoon. Ganji Siva, the accused, was arrested and produced before a court which sent him to two weeks of judicial remand. Police said Siva, who is 20 years younger to the survivor, was in an inebriated condition when he committed the crime.
Media reports have quoted a police officer at Visakhapatnam IV town station as saying that the woman, who had left her home after a family dispute, was sitting behind a tree on the pavement when she was attacked by the accused.
A video reportedly shot by an auto-driver showed that dozens of people walk past the spot without making any attempt to stop the man while some others were seen taking videos on their phones.
The woman was sent to a nearby hospital for medical examination. A case has been filed under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
