As Haryana is limping back to normalcy after days of violent protests by the Jat community members, shocking reports are coming from the state that several women were raped by highway goons near Murthal.

An English daily quoted local people as saying that women commuters going towards the National Capital Region (NCR) were attacked by 30-odd goons. “Their vehicles set afire, most ran for shelter. Some women could not flee. They were pulled out, stripped and raped,” the report said.

At least 10 women were reportedly raped by the gang.

An eyewitness told the paper that the district officials who arrived there refused to investigate the matter and advised the families to take the women home.

Police, however, dismissed the report saying it was just a rumour. They also urged media to refrain from writing anything that could create tension in society.

Nineteen people were killed and nearly 200 injured in the nine days Jats held Haryana to ransom, and in the process disrupted life in large parts of northern India.

The community wants reservation under the OBC category in government jobs and educational institutions.
