At least four children have been feared killed after a boat carrying around 40 schoolchildren capsized off the coast of Dahanu in Maharashtra on Saturday.

Approximately 25 children have been rescued, while eight have been reported missing. The incident happened near Parnaka Beach, which is around 120km away from Mumbai. The children were students of K.L. Ponda High School.

The Indian Coast Guard, which deployed three vessels and two aircraft, is coordinating with the police in sea and air search and rescue operations.

Initial reports claimed the tragedy was caused by the boat being overloaded and the children reportedly did not have life jackets.
