Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan sparked off another controversy on Saturday after he said underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was present during Narendra Modi's meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Lahore.

The Uttar Pradesh minister, who is prone to making controversial statements, said he had proof of Dawood's presence in the meeting.

"Prime Minister visited Pakistan by breaking international laws. He also met Dawood there. Let him (Modi) deny. I will give evidence. Who all did he meet behind closed doors?" Khan said.

While the BJP reacted sharply to his remarks and asked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to dismiss him from the cabinet, the Congress said Khan should not have made such a statement without substantiating it.

Modi had a surprise stopover in Lahore in December while returning to Delhi after his visit to Afghanistan.

The prime minister held talks with his Pakistani counterpart for 80 minutes and also attended the marriage of Sharif's grand-daughter Mehrun Nisa.

According to government sources, the idea of a visit emanated from a conversation between the two prime ministers when Modi called Sharif from Kabul to greet him on his 66th birthday.
