Actor Anupam Kher was on Wednesday appointed chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India, Information and Broadcasting ministry officials said.
Kher replaces Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as head of the Pune-based institute. His term had ended in March.
The appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chief in 2015 had triggered massive protests by thousands of students at the FTII. Chauhan was best known for playing Yudhishthir in the TV version of Mahabharata, and many felt he lacked credentials for such a top post.
A notification regarding Kher's appointment has been issued, officials said.
