The Reserve Bank of India will soon issue ₹ 100 denomination banknotes that will be slightly different from those in circulation.
According to a press release issued by the RBI here on Thursday, the new notes, under the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, will be without inset letter in the numbering panels. Bearing the signature of Governor Raghuram Rajan, the notes will have 2016 as year of printing.
The central bank prints and issues new currency notes of various denominations periodically, depending on the need, improving the security aspect of the existing currency notes as well as to replace soiled and damaged notes that will be taken out of circulation.
The design of the proposed 100 rupee banknotes will be similar in many ways to the ones issued as part of the Mahatma Gandhi Series- 2005 issued earlier. However, they have ascending size of numerals in the number panels, bleed lines and enlarged identification mark on the obverse.
Those in circulation now have an inset letter. The RBI had also issued in the past ₹ 100 denomination banknotes with the ascending size of numerals in the number panels but without bleed lines and enlarged identification mark.
All the banknotes in the denomination of ₹ 100 issued by the bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.
