Roof collapses in dilapidated Chandni Chowk building no casualties

New Delhi, Oct 30 (PTI) A portion of the roof of a dilapidated two-storey building collapsed in the Katra Baryan area of Chandni Chowk on Friday, but no casualties were reported as the family living there had gone out to celebrate Karwa Chauth, officials said.

The incident was reported to the Delhi Fire Services at 1.18 pm, following which four fire tenders and a police team were rushed to the spot, they said.

The family, which has been living in the rented accommodation for the past 40 years, alleged that the landlord had been pressuring them to vacate the premises.

They further alleged that their electricity and water connections had been disconnected for some time to force them to leave the house.

The family claimed that the collapse was deliberate and accused the landlord of getting the dilapidated structure demolished as part of a conspiracy to evict them.

Following the incident, the family sought government assistance, claiming that they had been left without a place to live.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
