New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has identified four residential colonies for development as Anupam Colonies by December 10, with a focus on four-way waste segregation, decentralised waste processing and greater participation by residents, officials said on Thursday.
The colonies identified are the Central Government Employees' Residential Complex on BKS Marg, West Kidwai Nagar, Sarojini Vihar and Chanakya Rail Enclave in Chanakyapuri.
As part of the initiative, the NDMC conducted an awareness drive at the BKS Marg residential complex, where inspections found 10 households handing over unsegregated waste.
Notices were issued to all 10 households, asking them to comply with waste segregation requirements.
The complex has 135 flats, of which 75 are currently occupied. Residents have been asked to segregate waste at source into four categories -- wet, dry, sanitary and special-care waste -- before handing it over to waste collectors, officials said.
The proposed Anupam Colonies initiative aims to process segregated wet and horticulture waste within residential complexes, reducing the need to transport it to distant processing facilities.
The NDMC also plans to set up 3R Centres and Neki Ki Diwaar facilities to encourage residents to donate old but usable items to people in need, promoting reuse.
Resident welfare associations (RWAs) in all four identified colonies have agreed to support the initiative, the civic body said.
The colonies will be declared Anupam Colonies by December 10, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed requirements, it added.
The NDMC, under Chairperson Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, will work with RWAs, residents and sanitation staff to improve waste segregation and promote decentralised processing across its jurisdiction, the statement read.
