Chaibasa, May 4 (PTI) A full-grown adult tusker suffered injuries on his leg, after accidentally stepping onto an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by Maoists in the Koyna forest range in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Monday, an official said.
Saranda Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Aviroop Sinha told PTI that this was the sixth such incident of an elephant getting injured, after stepping onto IED in the last few years.
“We got the information on Monday morning, and took precaution while reaching the place where the injured elephant was located, as there are chances of more IEDs planted in the forest. The jumbo has been administered medicines,” Sinha said.
The forest official said the tusker suffered injuries on his front leg.
“The leg has been fractured, though there was no apparent profuse bleeding from the wound. From the look of the injury, it is apparent that the elephant's entire leg had landed on the IED,” he said.
