Patna, Apr 20 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday said the Narendra Modi-led NDA government will eventually implement women's reservation in Parliament and state assemblies.
He was addressing 'Jan Akrosh Mahila Sammelan' in Patna's Gandhi Maidan, where a massive crowd of women turned up to protest against the Opposition for scuttling the passage of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, which was required for the implementation of 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam'.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha on April 17 as it could not get a two-thirds majority.
"Modi ji wants to provide 33 per cent reservation to women. Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav, and M K Stalin want only women members of their families to go to legislatures. But the PM wants 272 women of the nation to go to the Lok Sabha... We will eventually implement it in Parliament and state assemblies," Choudhary said.
He claimed that the Opposition has, for decades, "obstructed reservation for women", while the NDA governments at the Centre and in Bihar have been working for the upliftment of women.
"Nitish Kumar ji and Narendra Modi have worked for women's safety and progress, and now, your brother Samrat Choudhary will continue the same work. If anyone comes in the way of your safety and progress, we will trace them to the bottom of the earth," the Bihar CM said.
BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi, who was also present, alleged that the Opposition "maligned the dignity" of women and "disrespected" them.
"The manner in which the opposition parties defeated the bill in the Lok Sabha, and celebrated subsequently, was deplorable. The dignity of women was disrespected," he said.
"This angst will always remain in the hearts of women, and whenever Opposition leaders go among women to seek votes, they will get an appropriate answer," Saraogi added.
Former Bihar ministers and NDA leaders Leshi Singh and Shreyashi Singh were among those present in the rally.
