Janjgir, Jul 12 (PTI) Four children in the age group of five to eight years drowned in a pond at a village in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district on Saturday, police said.
Two of the four victims were a brother-sister duo, they said.
The incident occurred in the afternoon in Bhainstara village under Baloda police station limits when the victims went to play after returning from school, a police official said.
As per the preliminary information, the deceased, identified as Pushpanjali Srivas (8), her brother Tushar (5), Khyati Kenvat (6) and Ambika Yadav (6), returned from the school shortly after 12 noon, had their lunch and stepped out to play, he said.
Later, when their family members did not find the children around for a long time, they started searching for them and spotted their clothes on the bank of the water body, he said.
"They then called other villagers, who took the children out of the pond. They were immediately shifted to Baloda community health centre, where they were declared dead," he said.
On being informed, police personnel also reached the hospital, he said.
An accidental death report has been registered in this connection and further probe is underway, he added.
