New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi on Saturday strongly condemned the alleged gang-rape of a law student in south Kolkata, saying the "brutal" crime exposes the alarming state of women's safety in West Bengal and reflects a "complete failure" of the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
In a post on X, the minister said, "Shame is also ashamed in West Bengal! The brutal rape of a law student in Kolkata has shocked the country. This is not just a crime but a horrific picture of the insecurity of women in the state. The Mamata government is proving to be a complete failure in ensuring the safety of women."
Her remarks came days after the 22-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped inside a college campus in south Kolkata.
Annapurna Devi urged the state authorities to ensure swift justice and take urgent steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo-motu cognisance of the case and sent a letter to the state's director general of police (DGP), seeking a detailed action-taken report. The commission has said it is deeply concerned about the safety, dignity and well-being of the victim.
The Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested a security guard of a law college in connection with the alleged gang rape of the first-year student of the institute earlier this week, an officer said.
The total number of arrests has now reached four in connection with the crime that allegedly took place inside the guard's room on the college premises on June 25.
