Thane/Palghar, Jun 26 (PTI) Hundreds of villagers staged road blockades on key routes in Thane and neighbouring Palghar districts of Maharashtra on Thursday to highlight the poor condition of roads, describing them as death traps.
The protest organised by a local voluntary group was held at 11 locations simultaneously, during which the protesters raised slogans against the government, and demanded urgent repairs of roads, especially Bhiwandi-Wada and Bhiwandi-Vasai roads.
"These roads have been re-laid and repaired multiple times, but they go from bad to worse each time, especially during the monsoon. They have become death traps. Despite several meetings and appeals to the authorities, nothing has improved," said Rambhau Varna, president of Shramajivi Sanghatana.
Several persons have died due to road accidents, and the promises made by the government have turned out to be hollow, he said.
Police officials said as a result of the protest, traffic on the route was severely disrupted.
