Kurukshetra, Jun 26 (PTI) Two masked men opened fire in front of a hotel on National Highway 44, about 5 km from Shahabad Markanda in Haryana's Kurukshetra district early Thursday, police said.
Kurukshetra SP Nitish Aggarwal told PTI that the two assailants arrived at the hotel around 5 am on a motorcycle and fired 10 to 15 rounds.
They briefly entered the hotel and left a note at the reception, and then fired several more rounds outside the premises before fleeing. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Shahabad DSP Ram Kumar said the window panes of a few cars were shattered in the incident.
Aggarwal said eight police teams have been formed to investigate the case and arrest the culprits.
Police have got some clues and footage from nearly 60-70 CCTV cameras are being scanned, Aggarwal said.
Replying to a query, Aggarwal said the content of the note left by the attackers did not contain any extortion demand. Police sources said a name was mentioned on the note with a foreign phone number and further investigation in this regard was underway.
When asked if the incident was linked to the liquor mafia, the SP said, "It doesn't appear so at the moment, but the connection can only be confirmed after a thorough investigation."
The motive is not yet clear, he said, adding that "we are still working on the case".
The SP said he has spoken to the hotel owner, who did not mention receiving any threat or extortion call from anyone.
The hotel owner said "there was no previous threat, nor did I receive any warning after the attack. There's no enmity or dispute with anyone”.
The cash at the reception also remained untouched, ruling out robbery as a motive. A forensic team has collected several cartridge shells from the scene. The bike used by the attackers did not have any number plate, police said.
The incident came days after a liquor contractor named Shantanu was shot dead near the Meena Market on the national highway in Shahabad.
On Tuesday, wanted criminal Romil Vohra, linked to multiple murders in Haryana, including the liquor contractor murder case, and arms cases in Delhi, was shot dead during an encounter with police near the Delhi-Haryana border.
The opposition parties have targeted the BJP government in the state, alleging that law and order has deteriorated in Haryana.
Last week, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini chaired a review meeting to assess the law and order situation in the state and emphasised zero tolerance towards crime, saying maintaining a robust law and order is the utmost priority of the government.
