There’s no political pressure

Interview/ O.P. Singh, director general of police, Uttar Pradesh

The rape survivor’s family alleges negligence on the part of UP Police.

There was no negligence. We had deployed 10 police personnel for security—seven were static house guards and three used to move with them. Despite the insistence of our constable, they did not take him along, citing lack of space in their vehicle as they had to pick another person on the way. Till the CBI took over, we had a Special Investigation Team inquiring into the circumstances.

What are the charges slapped by the UP Police against Kuldeep Sengar?

An FIR has been registered against Kuldeep Sengar and others under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, based on the FIR of family members.

The girl’s uncle alleged that the police asked the family to “compromise” because Sengar was a lawmaker and with the BJP.

We shall definitely inquire about this allegation and take action against policemen if they are found guilty.

Are you aware of complaints that Sengar used to make calls from inside the prison to the rape survivor’s family members?

We are enquiring into the entire gamut of issues, and all such allegations of intimidation shall be factored into that inquiry.

Do you think the UP Police was not capable of handling the case? Why has a CBI probe been ordered?

The UP Police is fully capable of handling sensitive cases of investigation. The case was handed over to the CBI as it has been investigating the earlier case in which the deceased are witnesses. Secondly, it was also essential as per the family’s wishes.

Are there any lessons to be learnt from the Unnao incident?

It is a very unfortunate incident. My appeal to everyone is to have faith in investigative agencies and allow them some time to gather facts. Second, all those who avail of police protection should not impede the job of security personnel and should follow their advice.

Has the police faced political pressure in this case in the last three years?

There has been no political pressure of any sort in any of the cases.
