A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck the island of Java in Indonesia just before midnight on Friday. Tremors were felt in central and west Java and a series of aftershocks stoked panic. Indonesia's national disaster management agency said the quake activated early tsunami warning systems in the south of Java, prompting evacuations in some coastal areas, but no tsunami was detected.

Social media can make you feel bad: Study
Facebook has admitted that passively scrolling through posts on the social media network can leave people feeling worse afterwards. A study from the University of California, San Diego and Yale in the US found that people who clicked on about four times as many links as the average person, or who liked twice as many posts, reported worse mental health than average in a survey. According to the researchers, the positive effects were even stronger when people talked with their close friends online.
North Korea missiles not yet a threat to the US: Mattis
North Korea's latest missile test did not demonstrate an imminent threat of nuclear attack on the United States, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said. However, Mattis admitted the tests indicated increasing technological sophistication. The Trump administration is pursuing diplomacy before resorting to military options for eliminating the North's nuclear arsenal.
Mizoram becomes power-surplus state
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 60 MW Tuirial hydroelectric power project near Kolasib in Mizoram to the nation. Prime Minster said the central schemes for the benefit of the north-east had gained momentum and that his government was committed to developing the region. With the commissioning of the project, Mizoram has become the third power- surplus state in the north-east after Sikkim and Tripura.
