At least eleven students were injured after a student-gunman opened fire on a street outside a high school in Turkey’s western Manisa province on Tuesday. Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlen announced that the accused shooter, along with his parents and grandfather, has been detained.

Initial media reports indicate that the incident took place around 8:00 am on the street adjacent to the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. A large crowd had gathered outside the school after the accused shooter, a minor, allegedly opened fire in front of the school. Classes have been suspended at the school following the incident.

Turkey’s emergency call centre was immediately alerted, following which a large police task force and medical teams arrived at the scene. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Parents rushed to the school to collect their children, which led to a clash between them and the law enforcement officers who had ensured security measures around the school perimeter, Turkiye Today reported.

The accused was identified as a 15-year-old student who allegedly used a hunting rifle to shoot fellow students. CCTV footage showed that the teen was openly carrying the weapon to school.

"No negligence threatening our children's safety will go unanswered! The armed attack that occurred outside the school building, on the street our students use to walk to school, in the Turgutlu district of Manisa, wounding 11 of our students, two of them seriously, has deeply saddened all of us," Akin Gurlek wrote on X.

"The child who carried out the attack was apprehended and taken into custody within a short time, in the course of the juvenile justice process,” he added.

Turkey has been witnessing an increased number of shootings, prompting authorities to bring in stricter security measures, including gun controls, for the 2026-27 academic year. A 14-year-old killed nine students, including a teacher and himself, in Kahramanmaraş province. In another incident, an alumnus from a school in Şanlıurfa injured 16 people.
