Multiple people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at a restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

According to preliminary reports, the suspected gunman was among those killed. "We believe the threat to the community is over," Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said during a press conference.

Hicks said authorities were still working to determine the exact number of fatalities and injuries as officials continued notifying the victims' next of kin. "It was a very chaotic scene," he said.

The police chief added that the suspect "was nearby on the scene", and investigators were working to establish the individual's identity and the motive behind the shooting.

Videos shared on social media showed frightened customers and employees of the In-N-Out Burger restaurant fleeing into the parking lot as multiple gunshots rang out.

While early findings indicate the attack may have been carried out by a lone gunman, investigators are examining whether anyone else was involved. "We're working to determine now some of the other individuals who may have been involved in it," CNN quoted investigators as saying.

According to reports, the restaurant had opened only a week earlier. Located in a busy commercial district on the north side of Twin Falls, the outlet is surrounded by hotels and retail businesses in the regional hub, about 130 miles (209 km) southeast of Boise.

Police urged residents to avoid the area as officers cordoned off nearby roads during the investigation.

Twin Falls, home to about 56,000 residents, is located approximately 205 kilometres southeast of Boise and around 120 kilometres north of the Nevada border.
