Pakistan's former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was shifted back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a detailed medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. He was moved back to the jail after doctors cleared him to remain in custody.

The 73-year-old was taken from Adiala Jail to the hospital around midnight on Thursday under heightened security.

Expressing concerns over his health, the Pakistan Supreme Court had directed the authorities to provide specialised medical care.

According to reports, a six-member team of specialist doctors conducted Khan's medical examination at Shifa International Hospital.

The assessment revealed fluctuating blood pressure, anxiety, palpitations and headaches, as well as residual concerns relating to his earlier condition affecting the right eye.

Following the detailed examination, the doctors confirmed that he did not require hospitalisation at this point and it was safe for him to continue staying in custody.

Khan was placed under heavy security while he was taken to and from the hospital. Dozens of PTI supporters had gathered near the hospital.

Why was Imran Khan taken to hospital?

Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023. According to his lawyers, his health has deteriorated in prison, and he has lost significant vision in his right eye.

The Shehbaz Sharif government in Islamabad had approached the top court seeking a review and recall of its order. The government said that the medical reports disclosed no condition requiring immediate treatment.

Pakistan's Law Minister Azam Nazeem Tarar had argued that a convicted prisoner must be treated inside the jail or at a public hospital according to the law.

He was taken to the hospital after PTI threatened to file a contempt of court petition against the government on Friday if he was not admitted to the hospital by Thursday at 11.59 pm.
