Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail to Shifa International Hospital, addressing critical health concerns raised by his party and family. Khan, incarcerated since August 2023, will be moved within 48 hours and remain hospitalized until September 16, with the court stipulating he must cover his own medical costs. This development follows repeated appeals from PTI and Khan's family who expressed alarm over his declining health, including significant vision loss in his right eye. Concerns about his anxiety, stress, palpitations, and high blood pressure were also highlighted by former President Arif Alvi, who questioned the current medical treatments being administered.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered that former Prime Minister Imran Khan be moved to a hospital from jail on Tuesday. The move comes after a long-standing demand by his party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI and his family, who raised concerns about his health.

Cricketer-turned-politician Khan, 73, has been in jail since August 2023, after being convicted in a string of cases after he was removed with a no-confidence vote in 2022.

Khan, 73, is to be moved to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours and remain there until September 16, according to the court order, Khan's spokesperson Naeem Haider Panjutha said on X.

The direction comes after Khan’s family specifically sought treatment at Shifa International Hospital and supervision by his personal physicians. The court also directed that Khan bear the expense of the hospital treatment himself.

PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari told Reuters that they wish the order had happened sooner.

"It's a very welcome order, and we wish it had happened sooner so his eye and general health would not have deteriorated this much," he said. "He should remain in hospital until all doctors are satisfied," he added

Khan’s sons had also repeatedly expressed concerns regarding his deteriorating health last year.

His lawyers also said that he lost significant vision in his right eye while in prison.

Khan, a former cricketer turned politician and then prime minister, lost power after a no-confidence vote. he has since faced multiple cases, including over state gifts and unlawful marriage. Some of his convictions were suspended or overturned with appeals pending. Khan has denied any wrongdoing.

Cricket greats have expressed “deep concern” over his prison conditions and demanded better treatment for him.

Pakistan’s former president Arif Alvi also said that Khan’s medical reports were “alarming” on Tuesday.

“In order of priority, this is what worries me most: his anxiety and stress levels, his palpitations, and his high blood pressure. Sleeplessness is not mentioned in the report, but looking at the medications, it is almost certainly there too,” he said in a post on X.

Alvi said that Khan was being given medication without a diagnosis. “He is being given Citani and Lexotanil three times a day. These are not treatments for lack of sleep. These are treatments for daytime anxiety,” he said.

Alvi also detailed a list of tests that have to be given to Khan without delay in a detailed post.
