Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, a former British special forces member, who went missing after being caught in a deadly avalanche on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's (PoK) Broad Peak, has been confirmed dead, according to a statement by his expedition agency.
"Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive," Elite Exped, the agency, said in a public statement.
Broad Peak is the world's 12th highest mountain and stands at 8,051 metres. It is located near K2 in Karakoram range in PoK's Gigit-Baltistan. The deadly avalanche struck at around 7,000 metres height.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) stated that the climbing team included 10 members, including six Nepalese, one Pakistani, one Chinese, one Omani and one US climber.
The other bodies recovered by authorities include Nepali climber Pur Bahadur Gurung, Omani climber Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy and US climber Mallory Geis. The remaining mountaineers were still missing.
Who was Nirmal Purja aka Nims Dai?
Nirmal Purja, who is also known as Nims Dai, set a historical record in 2019 by climbing all of the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 metres in just six months. He also led the first team to the summit of world's second-highest mountain, K2, during winter. He was a former member of Britain's Brigade of Gurkhas and the Royal Marines' elite Special Boat Service.
The rescue operation was suspended late Friday due to adverse weather conditions in the region.
"The team started their ground mission again on Saturday morning to locate the missing climbers. Additionally, Nepali climbers present at the base camp with other expedition teams were also taking part in the operation," it said, adding that the rescue teams have identified the presence of more climbers at an altitude of 6,000 metres through drone footage.
