The brother of Pakistan’s imprisoned gangster Uzair Baloch was shot in Karachi’s Lyari on Thursday evening.

Zubair Baloch, 40, was reportedly shot twice, in the chest and Stomach. He is in a critical condition and was admitted to a nearby city’s civil hospital. Two passers-by were also injured in the firing.

A report by Dawn stated that the gunfire was carried out by miscreants who arrived on motorcycles with their faces covered. After firing, the miscreants fled after a shopkeeper returned fire, Syed Asad Raza, senior police officer, said that Zubair was outside his home during the firing.

Zubair was arrested in 2012 and released in January last year.

The incident is being investigated from all angles.

A social activist from the area told Dawn that Zubair had joined a political party a few months ago and had raised its flag in his area.

They also mentioned that there were rumours that some gangsters who fled to Dubai and Iran and returned after the US-Iran war, and that residents in the area feared that there would be a resurgence of the past gang wars in the area.

Uzair Baloch is known as the right-hand man of Abdul Rehman or Rehman Dacoit. Uzair had taken over Lyari after Rehman was killed in a police encounter. His name resurfaced after he was played by Indian actor Danish Pandoor in the spy thriller Dhurandhar. He was convicted of espionage in April 2020 and sentenced to 12 years in jail.

Uzair is also facing several other cases. The Anti-terrorism Court has rejected his bail pleas in seven different cases.

He and his associates are also accused of attacking police officers in Karachi.
