Moscow’s Zamoskvoretsky Court has arrested the suspect in the attempted assassination of Lyubomir Korba, Russian Defence Ministry Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, on Sunday, a day after the shooting took place.
Svetlana Petrenko, the spokesperson for the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, said that they arrested one, Lyubomir Korba, 65, from the UAE and extradited him to Russia. She said that Korba arrived in Moscow late last year on the instructions from Ukrainian intelligence.
"It has been established that Korba arrived in Moscow at the end of December last year on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence services to commit a terrorist attack," she told reporters on Sunday.
Korba’s accomplice, Victor Vasin, 66, a Russian citizen, was detained in Moscow and was charged with the attempted murder of a serviceman and illegal arms trafficking, according to a report by TASS.
Zinaida Serebritskaya, 54, another accomplice who organised the attack reportedlf left for Ukraine.
Investigators reportedly found the murder weapon, “a Makarov pistol with a silencer and three rounds of ammunition," after a thorough inspection.
On February 6th, Russian Defence Ministry Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was shot in the back several times in the entryway of his apartment building in Moscow.
The general regained consciousness after a surgery on February 7th.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the assassination attempt was "confirmed the Zelenskyy regime's focus on constant provocations, aimed in turn at disrupting the negotiation process." He called it an apparent terrorist act by Ukraine to derail peace talks.
Ukraine had denied Kyiv’s involvement in the assassination attempt.
Alekseyey has participated in organising “referendums” in the territory of Ukraine, which is occupied by Russia. In 2016, he was sanctioned by the US for being the mastermind behind the “malicious cyber activities” during the US presidential election the same year.
