Two people were killed and eight others critically injured in a shooting incident at Brown University in Rhode Island, the United States, on Saturday.

The suspect is still at large, and the police have launched a manhunt.

The university acknowledged widespread fear and uncertainty following the incident, which occurred at the Barus & Holley engineering building in Providence. The students were attending an exam when the suspect opened fire.

The identities of the two victims are not immediately known. The hospital personnel are also verifying the identities of those transported for medical treatment, officials said.

Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara said that the suspected shooter is a male dressed in black. Police are scouring local video cameras in the area for footage to get a better description of the suspect.

"We are using every resource available to locate this suspect," O'Hara was quoted as saying by CNN.

He added that police were still determining how the suspect entered the Brown University building, but confirmed that he exited through the Hope Street side.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley expressed shock over the incident and said the police were searching for the shooter.

"We are a week and a half away from Christmas. And two people died today, and another eight are in the hospital. So please pray for those families," Smiley told a news conference.

President Donald Trump termed the incident "terrible" and said: "All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt".

Brown is a private institution with roughly 7,300 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Sunday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.

The incident has once again ignited debates on the gun laws in the US, which has witnessed a surge in mass shootings in schools, workplaces and places of worship.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, 389 incidents of mass shootings were recorded in the US this year.
