A Florida hostel student was arrested this week after an unloaded AR-15 semi-automatic rifle was found under his bed, for which he had ordered 1,500 rounds of 9mm ammunition online.
Constantine Demetriades' bizarre online order to his hostel room at Rollins College quickly caught the eye of the assistant campus safety director, who then searched the 21-year-old's room, officials said, as per a Fox 35 Orlando report.
The Winter Park police later entered his room and found an AR-15 under the bed, in addition to six magazines—one loaded and five empty, after which he was arrested on Wednesday.
They also found a tactical vest, multiple knives, a black security vest, ear protection, and a storage case for pistols.
Demetriades has now been charged with a single count of possession of a weapon on school property.
Admitting that he had bought the ammunition online, he added that he did not know "that it was against the law to possess ammunition on campus". Indeed, though concealed carry is allowed in Florida, Rollins College, however, does not permit "any substance or device identified as a weapon" in its hostel rooms.
Demetriades also pointed out that he always kept the gun safely locked in his room, that he liked to "shoot as a hobby" only, and that he was allegedly unaware his New Jersey carry permit was invalid in Florida.
The 21-year-old college senior also explained that the gun was usually kept at a friend's place (off campus), and that he had only brought it to his hostel room once before.
Meanwhile, Rollins College said that it had "quickly identified and contacted the student", who cooperated fully with its officials and local law enforcement.
"The student was arrested and is not permitted to be on campus while we proceed with the student conduct process," it added, as per the report.
