The ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict entered its 100th day on January 14 and the death toll has neared 24,000 on the Gaza side alone.
Here are some key points about the war:
Deadliest Israel-Palestinian conflict
The war, which is still continuing, is the longest and deadliest war between the two sides since Israel was formed in 1948. According to the Gaza health ministry, at least 23,843 Palestinians, roughly one per cent of the Strip's population, have lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes since October 7, 2023, with at least 60,317 injured. The number of Palestinians killed in West Bank is 347 with over 4,000 wounded, as per reports.
Casualties among Israelis
More than 1,300 Israelis have been killed and 12,415 injured in the conflict since the war began. Of these, 790 were killed on October 7. A total of 314 Israeli soldiers were killed on October 7 and at least 187 more were killed during the ground offensive. Twenty-nine of these soldiers were killed in friendly fire or by accident. At least 2,496 Israeli soldiers were reportedly injured since October 7 and 1,085 of them were injured in the ground offensive.
Israeli and foreign hostages
Around 250 people were taken as hostages by Hamas on October 7. At least 33 hostages died or were killed in Hamas captivity. The number of remaining hostages held in Gaza are 132, as per latest reports. Of the 132 remaining hostages, 111 are men, 19 women and two children. Eleven of them are foreigners.
Toll among UN staff, health workers and journalists
At least 148 United Nations staffers have lost their lives during the ongoing war so far while at least 337 health workers and 82 journalists have also been killed.
No food and health care
About one-quarter of Gaza’s population is starving and only 15 of the 36 hospitals in the territory are operational, at least partially, according to the UN. A total of 121 ambulances were also damaged.
Schools, mosques, churches destroyed
It is also reported that around 45 to 55 per cent buildings in Gaza have been destroyed during the war and more than 69 per cent of school buildings have been damaged. Around 625,000 students have missed more than three months of school
The number of religious buildings suffering damages include 142 mosques and three churches.
More than 80 per cent of the population has been displaced and tens of thousands of people are now crammed into sprawling tent camps.
Number of militants killed and captured
Israel Defence Forces and other security agencies have captured 2,650 militants so far of who about 1,300 belong to Hamas. During the ongoing war, more than 8,000 militants, including senior commanders of Hamas, have been killed by Israel.
How the war began?
Israel declared war following a cross-border attack launched by Hamas on October 7. The group killed some 1,200 people, of whom most were civilians. Around 250 others were taken hostage of which many have been killed. This was the deadliest attack in Israel’s history and the deadliest for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel unleashed intense airstrikes in Gaza and later began the ground offensive. Tel Aviv said its goal is to get the remaining hostages released and the war is likely to continue throughout 2024.
Hezbollah and Houthis join conflict
With Iran-backed militant groups like the Hezbollah in Labanon and the Houthis in Yemen have also conducted attacks in response to the ongoing war.
Following the Hamas attack on Israel, Hezbollah militants also struck the country with Tel Aviv strongly retaliating. On January 2, Israel killed a senior Hamas leader in Beirut. However, there is no full-blown war between the two sides yet.
Meanwhile, the Houthi rebels, also backed by Tehran, attacked civilian cargo ships in the Red Sea. In response, the US and British militaries struck several Houthi targets in Yemen.
