Tsunami hits Japan coasts after 7.5 magnitude earthquake rattles country; evacuation ordered

Tsunami was reported in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures of Japan after a massive earthquake of 7.5 magnitude on Richter scale rattled the country on Monday, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Ishikawa's Wajima city witnessed tsunami of over 1.2 metres at 4.21pm local time while Toyama city reported a tsunami of 50 cm at 4.23 pm local time.

A tsunami warning was issued for coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui and Hyogo prefectures, the outlet added. Waves of up to 5 metres are predicted to hit the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, according to the country's meteorological department. Local residents were asked to evacuate from the area immediately.

Hokuriku Electric Power said it is ensuring safety at its nuclear power plants, NHK reported.

East Japan Railway Co. has suspended services on Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines following the tremors, reported Nikkei Asia.
