South Korea reports more than 300,000 new Covid-19 cases for the third day in a row

The government announced a vaccination plan for children between ages 5 to 11

South Korea, on Monday, reported over 300,000 cases of Covid-19 for a third consecutive day. Most of the new infections are caused due to the Omicron variant. Monday's tally of new infections is at 309,790, a drop from Sunday's tally of 350,190. 

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the total caseload is 6,866,222. The number of critical patients is 1,158. South Korea has been seeing a spike in Covid-19 cases since late January, when daily new cases jumped from four-digit to five-digit figures. 

The government announced a vaccination plan for children between ages 5 to 11, which will begin later this month. Children under the age of 11 accounted for 15 per cent of coronavirus cases, Interior Minister Jeon Hae-cheol told The Korea Herald. 

Health authorities have ended its rigorous contact-tracing program and shifted focus to treating serious cases and preventing deaths. 86. 6 per cent of South Korea's population has been vaccinated with two doses, while 62.6 per cent has received booster shots.
