At least four people were killed after a man opened fire inside a church in Sacramento, California, on Monday evening.

AP reported the man opened fire on his three children and their chaperone in the church in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento. All four victims were killed on the spot. The shooter then killed himself. The shooter was reported to be 39 years old, but no other details were released.

“The shooter was estranged from the children's mother, who had a restraining order against him, Sheriff Scott Jones said. Investigators believe the shooting happened during a supervised visit with the children and the fourth victim was their chaperone, Jones said,” AP reported.

Fox News reported the three children killed in the shooting were all under the age of 15.

It was unclear how many people were in the church at the time or whether any other services were in progress at the time.

Local media outlets reported a massive posse of police officials converged on the incident spot. A reporter for the Los Angeles Times tweeted the three children were girls and the shooter may have been mentally ill.

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted about the incident, calling it an “Another senseless act of gun violence in America - this time in our backyard. In a church with kids inside. Absolutely devastating.”
