The Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee on Monday announced its nomination of Stacey Abrams, Democratic Party politician and US voting rights activist for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Abrams' work follows in Dr Martin Luther King Jr.'s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights,” Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party member of Norway's parliament told Reuters.
“Abrams' efforts to complete King's work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society,” Haltbrekken added. Abrams has also been credited with the Democrats win in Georgia, a state that has been pro-Republican for decades.
Other candidates nominated for the prize include Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the World Health Organization, climate change activist Greta Thunberg, the Black Lives Matter movement, WikiLeaks besides Jared Kushner and his aide Avi Berkowitz who were nominated for negotiating peace between Israelis and the Middle East. Kushner’s nomination was announced on Sunday.
The winner will be announced in October.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the World Food Programme for its efforts to combat hunger and efforts to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas.
Members of parliaments worldwide, former winners and thousand others are eligible to propose candidates for the prize. A nomination, however, does not guarantee an endorsement from the Nobel committee in Oslo.
