Hillary Clinton has become the latest high-profile Democrat to endorse Joe Biden's bid to be the party’s presidential candidate for November's election.

Hillary, who was the Democrat candidate who lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 election, made the announcement at a townhall event organised by the Biden campaign on Tuesday to discuss the coronavirus and its impact on women.

Without directly naming Trump, Hillary lashed out at the US president's handling of the coronavirus.

“Just think of what a difference it would make right now if we had a president who not only listened to the science... but brought us together. Think of what it would mean if we had a real president rather than a man who plays one on TV," Hillary declared.

Referring to Biden's record as a six-term senator and two-time vice president, Hillary said he had been "preparing for this moment his entire life". Hillary declared, "This is a moment when we need a leader, a president like Joe Biden.”

Hillary is the latest Democrat to endorse Biden, who has already received support from former president Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders, his closest opponent in the party's primaries. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Elizabeth Warren, another Democratic contender who dropped out of the nomination race, have also endorsed Biden.

The Trump campaign attacked both Hillary and Biden as being part of the "Democrat establishment". “There is no greater concentration of Democrat establishment than Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton together. Both of them carry the baggage of decades in the Washington swamp and both of them schemed to keep the Democrat nomination from Bernie Sanders," Brad Parscale, Trump's campaign manager, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Interestingly, both Biden and Hillary had sought the 2008 Democrat nomination, which was won by Barack Obama. Then, the candidacy of both was attacked over their support of the Iraq invasion of 2003.
