Luxembourg becomes first country in the world to make public transport free

This will let approx. 40 per cent of households to save around 100 euros per year

In an attempt to reduce congestion on its roads, Luxembourg became the first in the world to make public transport free for all.

Free public transport will let approximately 40 per cent of households to save around 100 euros per year. Cars are the most commonly used form of transport in the country. Public transport will be free from midnight on Saturday.

Dunkirk in France made public transport free for all in September 2018.

Traffic jams had been notorious in Luxembourg city, capital of the country. Till now, in Luxembourg, buses are used for only 32 per cent of trips to work, while trains are used for 19 per cent work trips.

According to authorities, sales from tickets, which amounted to 41 million euros a year, accounted for 8 per cent of the annual budget.
