Former British prime minister David Cameron slammed current PM Boris Johnson over Brexit in extracts from his memoir on Sunday.

According to the extracts published in the Sunday Times newspaper, Johnson and one of his ministers Michael Gove became “ambassadors for the expert-trashing, truth-twisting age of populism”.

Cameron, who led the ‘Remain’ campaign to stay in the European Union, accused Johnson of backing Brexit only to further his own career. He said that Johnson believes campaigning for Britain to leave in the 2016 referendum would make him the “darling” of the Conservative party.

The 52-year-old former leader said he offered Johnson the post of defense secretary to stop him from joining the Brexit campaign, but he went ahead and “risked an outcome he didn't believe in because it would help his political career”.

The publication of Cameron's memoirs comes at a time when Britain is going through a political upheaval ahead of its scheduled exit from the EU on October 31. The ex-prime minister has been mostly away from the public eye since he stepped down after the historic referendum.

Johnson faced setbacks after his attempts to back a no-deal Brexit plan and call snap elections were defeated in the parliament. He said that under no circumstances would he delay Britain's exit from the EU, and it would leave without a divorce deal if it comes to that.

Cameron also claimed that Johnson believed the ‘Leave’ camp would lose, and if it won “there could always be a fresh renegotiation, followed by a second referendum”. However, Johnson now is against the proposal for a second referendum.
