Police suspect "terrorist motive" behind a shooting on a tram Utrecht that resulted in multiple injuries on Monday. "A possible terrorist motive is part of the investigation", Utrecht police said on Twitter.

Police said several people had been shot in a tram in the central city of Utrecht. Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was "deeply concerned" and that crisis talks were to be held in response to the incident.

Reports said security was heightened at the seat of the government in The Hague. "Several shots were fired in a tram and several people were injured. Helicopters are at the scene and no arrests have been made," said police spokesman Joost Lanshage.

Local media showed photographs of masked, armed police and emergency vehicles surrounding a tram that had stopped near a road bridge. Tram traffic in the area was halted, operator Qbuzz was quoted as saying by the ANP news agency.
