After two days of chaos and brawl, the Sri Lankan parliament is set to repeat a no-confidence motion on Friday.

After several rounds of discussions between party leaders and meetings between Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and President Maithiripala Sirisena, it was decided to take up the vote once again.

The president agreed to hold the vote of confidence after demanding amendments in compliance with the law. The president requested the United National Front leaders to remove clause 1 of the motion which was submitted to the parliament on Wednesday.

The president made the request at a meeting held on Thursday which was attended by the UNP, SLFP, TNA and TPA. The parties will once again come together to elect their prime minister.

The president had refused to accept the voice vote on November 14, stating that it was not done in proper manner. The parliament will be meeting at 1.30pm today to vote on the confidence motion against Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

After witnessing an unprecedented brawl, commotion and a height of chaos, the party leaders came together on Thursday to hold back-to-back meetings. The discussions lasted for more than two hours and centered on the current political situation in the island country.

The president requested all parties to respect the parliamentary chamber and to maintain peace. He requested them to act according to democratic procedures and respect standing orders.
