Indian teenager Kumkum Mohod scripted history on Saturday by winning India's first individual women's recurve gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

The 17-year-old edged South Korea's Oh Yejin 6-5 in a dramatic shoot-off after the final was tied at 5-5. With the gold medal decided by a single arrow, Oh shot an 8 before Kumkum held her nerve to fire a perfect 10 and seal the title.

Kumkum became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the individual recurve event at the Asian Games — and the first to win gold.

Earlier, Kumkum stormed into the final with a 6-2 victory over China's Jingyi Zhu. She also secured one of the two quota places available for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. As per the rules, the quota place belongs to India rather than the individual athlete.

The gold capped a remarkable campaign for Kumkum, who had already won women's recurve team gold and mixed team silver on Friday.

She teamed up with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma to defeat South Korea 5-3 in the women's recurve team final, securing India's first-ever Asian Games medal in the event. Later, she partnered Dhiraj Bommadevara to win silver in the mixed recurve team event, with India losing 3-5 to China in the final.

With Kumkum's individual gold, India's medal tally had reached 77 at the time of writing, comprising 17 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals.
