Will Manchester City sign Barca's Marc Bernal to replace Real Madrid-bound Rodri?
Academy product Marc Bernal is loved by Hansi Flick for his many qualities, including an excellent composure to make the right decision under pressure from the opposition
Manchester City is reportedly pursuing Barcelona's 19-year-old midfielder Marc Bernal as a potential successor to Rodri, who is rumored to be moving to Real Madrid. Bernal, a product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, has made 36 senior appearances and is contracted until 2029, with a reported €30 million valuation and a significant €500 million release clause. His control of game tempo, stability in build-up play, and ball-winning capabilities under pressure have drawn interest from Manchester City's manager Enzo Maresca. Despite Barcelona's financial constraints, the club's intent to retain Bernal is evident through his hefty release clause, although the player himself previously rejected Manchester United in favor of a role at Camp Nou. Other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, are also said to be monitoring his progress.

La Masia graduate Marc Bernal is said to be Manchester City's target to replace Rodri, who is rumoured to join Real Madrid this summer.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who has played 36 times for the Barcelona senior team and is contracted until 2029, is estimated to be worth €30 million. However, the Catalan side have reportedly safeguarded the teenager's future with a €500 million release clause.
It also remains to be seen if the Spaniard is open to a move away from Camp Nou. Earlier, he had rejected the chance to join Manchester United in the hope of becoming a mainstay at Barca, CaughtOffside said in a report.
Why Man City want Marc Bernal?
Bernal can orchestrate the play and control the match’s tempo. He is a midfielder capable of providing the team with stability in build-up play while positioned just ahead of the backline. Against teams playing a high press, Bernal can win the ball out of the back, and is patient in maintaining his position behind the ball to ensure a constant flow of play.
While the huge release clause hints at Barcelona's determination to keep the young CDM, the never-ending financial constraints that haunt the club are what potential bidders would be hopeful of exploiting.
Enzo Maresca's Manchester City are reportedly not the only English club tracking Bernal. London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are also said to be impressed by the youngster, who has got five senior goals and an assist to his credit so far.
"His [Bernal's] physical presence, composure in possession, and ability to receive the ball under pressure make him an understandable target for Enzo Maresca’s system," CaughtOffside said in a report.
Rodri, who underwent a minor medical procedure after captaining Spain to its second FIFA World Cup glory, is expected to join José Mourinho at Real Madrid.
