Crystal Palace remain the frontrunners to sign centre-back Strahinja Pavlović from AC Milan, but everything could change in a whisker as Manchester United are set to enter the race, a report said.

The Serbian Pavlović, 24, could leave AC Milan if they fail to qualify for European competition this season. With two rounds left to play in Italy, Milan are fighting a fierce battle for the final Champions League slot with Roma and Como. Failing to make the cut may convince Pavlović to say yes to the highest bidder, with a couple of years left to go on his current deal.

It was the Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport that reported that Palace are set to lose out as Manchester United are likely to bid for Pavlović. While AC Milan want him to stay but are forced to let their young defender go, he will cost around €40 million (£35 million), the report said. When he arrived at AC Milan a couple of years ago from Red Bull Salzburg, he cost around €18 million.

The 6 ft 4 in tall centre-back is physical and is a threat in the rival box. He is a front-footed, aggressive centre-back who excels in high-pressing systems. He is comfortable on the ball and is known for his progressive passing instead of being very conservative. Pavlović completes over 50 passes per game and is an absolute monster when it comes to aerial duels.

Constant injury concerns for Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez are an area of concern for United. Luke Shaw is also fading out, and the club have decided to play it safe by roping in another elite centre-back along with multiple signings in the midfield. A return to European competition means the upcoming season is set to become more intense, and squad rotation will become key to a fruitful campaign.
