One of the major talking points in Indian cricket at the moment revolves around Shubman Gill's medical condition. India's Test captain sustained a neck spasm while batting in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, forcing him to miss the ongoing fixture in Guwahati.
Neck spasms can be tricky to deal with and it now appears that Gill is also set to miss the limited-overs series against South Africa. There are three ODI and five T20I scheduled against the Proteas, starting from November 30. The medical staff understandably want to preserve Gill and aren't keen on rushing back into action with the packed calendar ahead.
Gill still has the neck brace on and the medical staff is constantly monitoring his progress. Regulat communication is on between the team management, medical staff and the BCCI. According to a report from Times of India, Gill's 2025 is effectively over and is expected to make his comeback only in January 2026.

New Zealand are scheduled to tour India after the ongoing South Africa series. The Black Caps, however, are only visiting for a limited-overs tour and as per updates, Gill is likely to return to action sometime during that series. New Zealand's tour comprises of three ODIs and five T20Is, with the series slated to start from January 11.
It must be noted that India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also out of action till February end according to reports. In such a scenario, India will have a new captain for the white-ball leg of the South Africa series and sources say that Rishabh Pant could be the stand-in skipper during this period. Pant is currently captaining India in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati.
