Marc Guéhi almost confirmed his departure for Liverpool and Crystal Palace had even readied a farewell video for their captain before backing out as they couldn't find a world-class replacement for the defender. Oliver Glasner had threatened to quit if Guéhi was let go in the summer window and Palace management gave in to his pressure tactic, backing out from the deal with Liverpool at the last minute. Now, the Eagles will have to witness the English centre-back walk off as a free agent at the end of the season unless they find some middle ground to convince their manager to sell their highly-rated skipper in January.
Meanwhile, latest reports suggest that the cancelled transfer talks for Guéhi with Liverpool could actually profit Crystal Palace in January as another European giant has entered the race for the defender. Defending La Liga champions Barcelona are willing to challenge the Reds for Guéhi as the 25-year-old has been marked as a winter priority by Hansi Flick. Crystal Palace are likely to let Guéhi go in January for a sum close to €20 million (£17 million), a sum Barcelona will have no problem spending.

Liverpool's original plan was to wait for his current deal to expire so that they can have him for free, but the threat from Barcelona means they will be open to breaking the bank in winter if the need arises. It is also possible that other top-tier clubs, including Barca's arch-rivals Real Madrid could enter the race for Guéhi, and Arne Slot's team will not take any chances, El Nacional said in a report.
Both Flick and Slot consider Guéhi a star with the required physique, speed, and ability to anticipate and lead their defence lines—qualities that fit perfectly with the style he seeks to instill in the team. While Barca are looking to fill the void formed following the departure of Iñigo Martínez to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool need him to replace Ibrahima Konate, who is almost certain to join Real Madrid.
As far as Barcelona are concerned, the financial fair-play rules are also a factor, as they will have to ensure an exit or two before they could seal Guéhi as their first winter signing, El Nacional added. Guéhi is open to joining the Catalan team, the report added, as he is aware that signing for the famed club is a major step-up for him.
