A couple of weeks after the Paris Olympics 2024 ended, the para-athletes will take the centre stage, as the Paralympics 2024 kick-started yesterday in the French capital with a glittering opening ceremony. India, with its largest-ever contingent – 84 athletes across 12 sports – will begin their campaign today.
Javelin throw star Sumit Antil, who won the javelin gold at the Tokyo Paralympics, and shot-putter Bhagyashri Jadhav, a silver-medallist in shot-put at the Asian Para Games in China, led the Indian contingent out in the athletes' parade yesterday.
Among the Indian athletes in action today, badminton stars Suhas Yathiraj and Manasi Joshi, and archers Sheetal Devi and Sarita will be in the spotlight.
There are several other medal contenders in the contingent, like rifle shooter Avani Lekhara (10m Air Rifle Standing SH1), who became the first woman to win a Paralympic gold four years ago, Hokato Sema (shot putter) and Narayana Konganapalle (rower).
India had won 19 medals, including five gold, at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. The expectations are high after India's record haul of 111 medals, including 29 gold, at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year.
