The Group F 'Group of Death' was thrown wide open with a decisive 4-2 victory for Germany against Portugal in the Euros 2020. The group with three big contenders France, Germany and Portugal are currently ranked in that same order. Germany is on three points, the same as Portugal, and one less than France. The victory comes as a major relief for Germany who faced numerous questions after their loss in the opening fixture. Portugal had won their maiden game against Hungary, with Ronaldo scoring two late goals in a 3-0 victory, which piled pressure on Germany who lost 1-0 to France. With no goals scored and no points in the standings, the pressure was all on Germany to do much better before the team's final Group F match against Hungary.

In the match, Cristiano Ronaldo fired the opening salvo for Portugal in the 15th minute, but the defending champions went into the second half 1-2 courtesy two own-goals by Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro. The Germans scored twice more, with Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens hitting the nets, before Diogo Jota pulled one back for Portugal.

"We never had any doubts after losing to the world champions," German coach Joachim Loew told reporters. "We knew we could do better."

"Anyone can progress. This group was always very strong," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos. "Whether we progress or not is still up to us. And we must respond to this."
