Arsenal have sacked manager Unai Emery after 18 months in charge, the Premier League club announced on Friday, saying performance was not at “the level required”.

“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required,” the club said in a statement.

“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success,” said Arsenal board member Josh Kroenke.

Former Swedish footballer Freddie Ljungberg will take over as interim coach.

“We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.”

Emery had succeeded Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager at the end of the 2017-2018 season. During Emery’s first season, Arsenal finished sixth in the Premier League. However, this season, Arsenal have gone seven games without a victory. The club is currently placed eighth in the Premier League standings after four wins in 13 matches. The recent 2-2 draw against Southampton and last night's 2-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League seem to have factored in the club's decision to sack the Spaniard who took over as head coach in May 2018.
