Former Paris St Germain manager Unai Emery has been appointed by Arsenal to replace outgoing manager Arsene Wenger, the club said in a statement.

“Unai Emery is to become our new head coach,” said the statement on the Arsenal website. “He joins the club after completing a two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where he recently landed the treble of Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a photo appeared on Emery's official website (www.unai-emery.com/en) announcing him as Arsenal's coach.

The image included a picture of Emery next to the Arsenal badge with the message, “Proud to be part of the Arsenal family” before it was taken down.

According to the BBC, the recruitment process was led by Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, head of football relations Raul Sanllehi and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

Emery had previously been manager at Sevilla, who he steered to three Europa League triumphs. Emery, who joined PSG in June 2016, left the French club at the end of this season.

Emery had helped PSG continue their domestic dominance, but as the French club did not succeed in making any headway in the Champions League, his exit was imminent. Emery's team were beaten in the last-16 of the Champions League by Real Madrid this season despite breaking the world transfer record to sign Brazil striker Neymar, and were knocked out at the same stage last season by Barcelona.

Wenger left Arsenal after nearly 22 years at the helm. Arsenal finished sixth in the league this season.

With Wenger leaving at the end of the season, Arsenal had an uphill task of finding the right replacement. Under Wenger, Arsenal had won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
