Former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur head coach following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino. Mourinho has signed a contract until the end of the 2022-23 season, as per a statement released by the club on Wednesday.

“I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters,” said Mourinho. “The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy said, “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Levy, in a statement released on Tuesday, had said that the decision to sack Pochettino was not done in haste, and the club was “extremely reluctant to make this change”.

Pochettino, who was appointed the Spurs' manager in 2014, was sacked on Tuesday following what the club called a poor run of results in the beginning of the new season. The decision came just six months after Pochettino led the Spurs to the Champions League final, which they lost 0-2 to Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently placed 14th in the standings, having won only three of their 12 Premier League matches. This season they were knocked out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Colchester United and suffered an embarrassing 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
