West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated former India captain Sourav Ganguly on being named the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday.

Banerjee took to Twitter and wrote that the Cricket Association Bengal president made “India and Bangla proud”.

“Heartiest congratulations to @Sganguly99 for being unanimously elected @BCCI President. Wish you all the best for your term. You have made India and #Bangla proud. We were proud of your tenure as CAB President. Looking forward to a great new innings,” the chief minister tweeted.

According to reports, Ganguly became the front-runner for the post of BCCI president after Brijesh Patel faced stiff resistance during an informal meeting on Sunday. The last date to file nominations is October 14, but there was no opposition to Ganguly's appointment and therefore, election will not be held for the same.

“Obviously, it's a great feeling as I have played for the country and captained the country,” said Ganguly. “And I am taking over at a time when BCCI has not been in the greatest of position for the last three years. Its image has got hampered quite a lot.”

Ganguly is currently serving as the CAB president since his appointment in 2015. He was re-elected to the post for a second term this September, and will stay on as the CAB president till September 2020 before going into a compulsory cooling off period as per the BCCI constitution.
