In a quest to make it an all-India final in the women's singles, like at the Commonwealth Games earlier in the year, Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu took to the court on August 27.

Saina went first, against Chinese Taipei's world number one Tai Tzuying to whom she lost 17-21, 14-21. With the bronze, Saina gave India its first individual badminton medal since 1982.

Saina conceded a four-point lead in the beginning, but clawed back to make it 10-10. Saina let out a scream every time she won a point, realising the magnitude of the occasion. Some excellent placement by Tai saw Saina sweating, and eventually losing the set 17-21.

The second set began with Tai taking a three-point lead, but Saina soon made it 6-6. However, Tai again went three points clear. Saina made it 13-12, taking the lead for the first time in the match. But Tai soon came back and got a six-point lead. The set, and the match, ended when Tai took the second set 21-14.
