Day five, and a huge upset. The men's team lost to Iran in the semifinal 27-18, which means that, for the first time in Asian Games history, India will not win gold. The women, however, beat Chinese Taipei 27-14 in the semifinals, and assured India of at least a silver.
In shooting, another teenager stepped up for India. Shardul Vihan won silver in the men’s double trap event with a score of 73. The Korean gold medallist Shin Hyunwoo scored 74.
However, the women did not match up. In the double trap final, Shreyasi Singh and Varsha Varman finished 6th and 7th with scores of 121 and 120. The Chinese shooter Qingnian Li won gold with 136, an Asian record.

In archery recurve men’s individual, Vishwash won against Mongolia’s Purevsuren Bataa 6-2, but lost to Kazakhstan’s Ilfat Abdullin 1-7 in the pre-quarterfinals. Atanu Das entered the quarterfinals beating Kazakhstan’s Denis Gankin 7-3, but lost to Indonesia’s Agata Salsabilla Riau Ega 7-3 to end his quest for a medal in the category.
Promila Daimary lost 2-6 to Mongolia’s Urantungalag Bishindee in the 1/16 elimination round. Deepika Kumari won that round against North Korea’s Ji Hyang Ri 6-2, but faltered against Chinese Taipei’s Chien-Ying Lei at the next hurdle, losing 3-7. This ended the star’s player’s medal chances in individual events.
In gymnastics, Aruna Budda Reddy and Pranati Nayak qualified for the women’s vault final, but failed to win a medal. They finished 7th and 8th respectively, with scores of 12.775 and 12.650. The gold medal winner, South Korea’s Seojeong had a score of 14.387.
Badminton saw a lot of matches today. P.V. Sindhu began her campaign with a tight victory against Vietnam’s Vu Thi Trang. She won 21-10, 12-21, 23-21 to enter the round of 16. Her teammate Saina Nehwal had an easier progression, beating Iran’s Aghaeihajiagha S. 21-7, 21-9.
The team of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy beat Mohamed T.A. and Rasheed M.A. from the Maldives 21-10, 21-8 to reach the round of 16. Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat the team of Cheng Y and Tam Ch from Hong Kong 21-12, 21-14 to enter the round of 16.
In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy beat Ng Wg and Nt Yeung from Hong Kong 21-16, 21-15 to advance to the round of 16. However, the team of Rutaparna Panda and Arathi Sara Sunil lost 11-21, 6-21 to Thailand’s Chaladchalam C. and Muenwong P.
Satwik and Ashwini lost 25-27, 16-21 to Thailand’s Puavaranukroh D. and Taerattanachai S. in the round of 32 of the mixed doubles event. Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy lost to Malayasia’s Chan P.S. and Goh L.Y. 15-21, 21-23.
In tennis, Ankita Raina lost the semifinal against China’s Shuai Zhang 4-6, 6-7, but won bronze.
In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan defeated Japan’s Uesugi Kaito and Sho Shimabukuro 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 to enter the final, assuring India of at least a silver.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran won the quarterfinal in men’s singles, beating Kwon Soonwoo of South Korea 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, and assuring India of at least one more bronze.
In swimming, Virdhawal Khade qualified for the men’s 50m butterfly event final with a timing of 24.09s. Srihari Nataraj broke the national record en route to the final of the men’s 200m backstroke final, with a time of 2:02.97. However, he failed to win a medal in the final, finishing sixth with a timing of 2.02.83.
In squash, veteran Saurav Ghoshal beat Sri Lanka’s Shamil Mohomed to enter the round of 16 in men’s singles. He then beat Pakistan’s Aslam Tayyab 3-1 to enter the quarterfinals. Harinder Pal Sandhu, too, beat his round of 16 opponent, Andrew Robert Garcia from the Philippines, 3-1 to enter the quarterfinals. In women's singles round of 16, Joshna Chinappa beat Aribado Jemyca of Philippines 11-2 11-8 12-10 and Dipika Pallikal Karthik beat Rohmah Yeni Seti of Indonesia 11-6 11-5 11-5.
In volleyball, the Indian women lost to Kazakhstan 8-25, 19-25, 23-25. They have lost all of their three group matches.
In basketball, the women lost their last group match to Indonesia 69-66, ending their journey at this edition of the Asian Games.
In sport climbing, Chingkheinganba Maibam qualified for the speed final, but finished 12th.
